Before Hiring an Artisan

What to check before inviting someone to your home or workplace

Verify Before You Hire

1

Check the Verification Badge

Only hire artisans with the Verified Pro badge. This means we've confirmed their identity and documents.

2

Read Reviews & Ratings

Look at their star rating and read comments from previous clients. Low ratings or no reviews should be a warning sign.

3

Ask for Their Full Name

When you call, confirm their full name matches what's on their profile. Scammers often use fake names.

4

Get a Written Quote

Ask for a detailed quote via WhatsApp or SMS before they arrive. This creates a record and helps avoid surprise charges.

5

Tell Someone

Inform a friend or family member about the appointment — who's coming, when, and the address.

DO This

  • Meet in a public place first if possible
  • Have someone else present during the visit
  • Keep your phone nearby and charged
  • Take photos of the work before and after
  • Pay only after job is completed satisfactorily
  • Ask to see their ID card on arrival

DON'T Do This

  • Don't pay 100% upfront before work starts
  • Don't invite strangers when you're home alone
  • Don't share your bank PIN or passwords
  • Don't leave them unattended in your home
  • Don't accept "cash-only" if you feel uncomfortable
  • Don't use artisans outside this platform

Payment Safety Tips

Agree on Price First

Discuss and agree on the total cost before work begins. Get it in writing via WhatsApp.

Split Payments

Consider paying 30-50% upfront and the rest after completion. This keeps both parties committed.

Get a Receipt

Always ask for a receipt or written acknowledgment of payment.

No Pressure

If an artisan pressures you for immediate full payment, that's a red flag. Walk away.

Before Going to a Job

Protect yourself when visiting client locations

Pre-Job Checklist

1

Confirm the Appointment

Call the client 1-2 hours before to confirm they'll be available. If they don't answer, reschedule.

2

Share Your Location

Tell a trusted person where you're going, the client's name, phone number, and expected return time.

3

Carry Your ID

Always have a valid ID card with you. Clients may ask to verify your identity.

4

Assess the Location

When you arrive, look around. If the area feels unsafe or the situation seems suspicious, leave immediately.

5

Keep Your Phone Charged

Ensure your phone has enough battery. Keep it in your pocket, not your bag, for quick access.

Warning Signs — Leave Immediately If You See These

The address doesn't match what was discussed

No one seems to live at the location

The client refuses to identify themselves

DON'T Do This

  • Don't go to jobs after dark in unfamiliar areas
  • Don't accept jobs that feel "off" or too good to be true

Professional Conduct Tips

Be Punctual

Arrive on time. If delayed, call the client to inform them.

Communicate

Explain what you're doing. Clients appreciate transparency.

Deliver Quality

Good work leads to good reviews, which leads to more clients.

Common Scams to Watch Out For

Both clients and artisans can be targets. Here are the most common scams on service platforms:

The "Advance Fee" Scam

Someone asks you to send money for "materials," "transportation," or "booking fee" before any work is done — then disappears.

How to protect yourself: Only pay through the platform. Never send money directly to someone you haven't met. If they pressure you for upfront money, report them.

The "Bait and Switch" Scam

The quoted price is ₦5,000, but after starting work, they demand ₦15,000 — holding your property "hostage" until you pay.

How to protect yourself: Get a written quote before work starts. If the price changes, they must explain why and get your approval first. If they threaten to keep your property, call the police.

The "Off-Platform" Scam

Someone asks you to move the conversation off Real Estate Artisan (e.g., "Let's chat on Telegram") to avoid platform protections and accountability.

How to protect yourself: Keep all communication on the platform or on WhatsApp using the number provided here. If they insist on another app, it's a red flag.

The Fake Artisan Scam

Someone creates a fake profile, pretends to be a verified artisan, and collects payment without doing any work.

How to protect yourself: Only hire artisans with the green Verified Pro badge. Check their photo matches the person who arrives. Verify their ID on arrival.

The "Phishing" Scam

You receive a message claiming to be from "Real Estate Artisan Support" asking for your password, PIN, or bank details.

How to protect yourself: Real Estate Artisan will NEVER ask for your password, PIN, or bank details via message. If you receive such a request, it's a scam. Report it immediately.
